Beginning fall 2017, Northwest Christian University music students will be able to pursue a music major in Contemporary Music Industry or Christian Worship to prepare them for professions in the music industry and Christian worship.
“Contemporary Music Industry and Christian Worship are for students who are called to lead from the pulpit, choir, director’s booth, studio, or boardroom,” said Dennis Lindsay, D.Theol., Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty. “Our graduates have the advantage of a Christian liberal arts education combined with excellent professional degree tracks.”
Students majoring in Contemporary Music Industry will study technology and music, music production, production and talent management, music business, and other courses that will provide them with the education and experience to work in a recording studio or in live sound and production.
“Students studying Contemporary Music Industry will be well-prepared for the entertainment industry or to work in producing quality worship and performance experiences in Church,” said Karen DeYoung, M.A., Assistant Professor of Music.
The Christian Worship major prepares students pastorally to lead authentic worship of God within intercultural settings and in a variety of church organizations. The curriculum is biblically and theologically informed to provide a solid foundation for understanding and celebrating Christian worship. Students in this major will choose from two concentrations in Music or Creative Arts and will enroll in classes that include: Worship Theology and Planning, History of Worship in the Church, Leadership Skills for Ministry, among others.
“With the increased use of technology and music in churches as well as in business and non profit sectors, students earning a bachelor’s degree in Contemporary Music Industry or Christian Worship will fill a workforce demand for well-educated graduates who have a strong academic, artistic and administrative skill set,” DeYoung said. “We are excited to add pathways within our growing Music Departments’ offerings for students who want to integrate their faith and academic study with music and the creative arts.”
