EUGENE, Ore. – Jay Jones, an adjunct instructor in Bushnell University’s newly launched Digital Media and Graphic Design program, brings a wealth of industry expertise and a passion for guiding emerging artists. With a background in Film Production from Vancouver Film School and studies in Art History at the University of Oregon, Jones combines academic training with over 20 years of professional experience. His career includes roles as Creative Director for local agencies, Owner of One Click Sports Now, and Producer/Director for SQUIDDL.
Jones is excited to share his extensive experience with students as they try to bridge the gap between vision and execution. His approach emphasizes building a strong foundation in fundamentals, such as composition, thereby equipping students with the foundational knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to bring their creative ideas to life, regardless of how the industry evolves.
Though Jones brings technical expertise to the classroom, his focus extends beyond just skills. He is passionate about helping students cultivate a deeper understanding of the creative process and fostering an environment where they can aspire to innovate and use their talents for greater purposes. Under his guidance, students learn how to incorporate photography into their daily routines, sharpening their creative perspectives and refining their abilities to capture compelling visuals. Jones also ensures that students are exposed to cutting-edge technologies, which helps prepare them to tackle real-world challenges and adapt to an evolving digital landscape. With a curriculum rooted in creativity and hands-on experience, the program fosters a lifelong passion for digital media.
Jones’s philosophy of blending creativity with technical mastery aligns closely with the approach of Bushnell marketing professor, Christy Silverthorne, M.A. Silverthorne emphasizes the importance of “social good” in her marketing approach, and this value is woven into the fabric of the marketing degree programs at Bushnell. By partnering with local nonprofits, students apply their skills in service of causes that matter, creating digital media campaigns that make a tangible impact on the world. Both Jones and Silverthorne share the belief that design and creativity should serve a higher purpose, inspiring students to use their talents to meaningfully contribute to the greater good.
Reflecting on his career, Jones wishes he had access to today’s tools and knowledge when he started. His journey from film to photography reminds him that new passions often arise unexpectedly. He quotes 1 Peter 4:10-11, which emphasizes that “each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others,” encouraging students to stay open to where their gifts may lead.
