Bushnell Alumnus Dr. Anson Sin Honored with DAISY Award

EUGENE, Ore. – Dr. Anson Sin, a 2023 graduate of Bushnell University’s Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program, was recently recognized with the prestigious DAISY Award for his exemplary compassionate care as a Registered Nurse in the Surgical Care Unit at McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center, located in Springfield, Ore. The DAISY Award is an internationally celebrated recognition for extraordinary nurses, given through nominations from patients, families, and healthcare colleagues who have witnessed exceptional dedication and kindness. In Dr. Sin’s case, the family of an elderly patient expressed deep gratitude for the comfort and peace of mind they felt with him caring for their loved one, emphasizing his kindness, patience, and commitment to compassionate care.

Reflecting on his award, Dr. Sin shared that “hearing about the nomination and selection filled me with immense gratitude and humility. Knowing that the care I strive to provide resonated so positively with patients and their families was deeply fulfilling.” He went on to express appreciation for his colleagues and mentors: “The support and shared dedication of my colleagues at McKenzie-Willamette inspire me every day to approach my role with renewed passion and commitment.”

Dr. Sin believes that compassion is central to his practice. “To me, compassionate care means approaching each patient with empathy and a genuine understanding of their unique needs, while extending support to their families during vulnerable times.” He further emphasized the importance of creating a welcoming environment in the Surgical Care Unit, where patients feel genuinely cared for and respected.

The DAISY Award, created by The DAISY Foundation, honors nurses who go beyond clinical excellence to provide deeply compassionate, patient-centered care. Nominees are reviewed by an internal committee in each participating organization, and honorees receive a unique celebration. Each honoree receives a certificate, a hand-carved Healer’s Touch Sculpture, an Honoree pin, and is recognized among peers. Through more than two decades of success, the DAISY Award has become an evidence-based recognition tool, enhancing job satisfaction, retention, and teamwork among nurses. This award has made a profound impact, reminding recipients of the vital role they play in healthcare and the comfort they bring to patients and their families.

Dr. Sin also credits Bushnell University’s ABSN program with giving him the skills, resilience, and empathy needed to excel in nursing: “Bushnell’s Nursing School taught me to approach every challenge with integrity and compassion.” He encourages current students to likewise “embrace every learning opportunity with an open mind” and to remember that “even the smallest act of empathy can have a lasting effect on patients and families.”

For those inspired by Dr. Sin’s journey, Bushnell’s ABSN program offers a path into the nursing profession, equipping students with the clinical expertise and compassionate outlook essential to healthcare. Learn more about the program at www.bushnell.edu/college-of-health-professions/absn/.
