EUGENE, Ore. – 15 years to the day after their last win against Corban University, the Bushnell men’s soccer team shutout their Willamette Valley rivals 2-0, and earned their school-record ninth win of the season in the process.
The Beacons (9-3-2, 3-3-2 CCC) out-shot Corban (4-7-2, 2-4-2) 14-5 in the game and allowed just one shot-on-goal in a showcase performance that featured a pair of first-half scores.
Corban had their best opportunity early on when Bryan Lopez blasted a shot in the eighth minute. Bushnell keeper William Haberfield made a leaping save, clearing the ball over the crossbar to claim the only save he would need to register his fourth shutout of the season.
Bushnell took over the game from that point on and just six minutes later, scored the game-winner. Danny Rojas drove the ball down the left side of the pitch and sent a pass to Caleb Premo at the top of the box. The senior then slotted a through ball up to Giovanni Agogliati, who quickly chipped the keeper to connect with the back of the net. It was Agogliati’s fifth goal of the season and Premo’s seventh assist.
“We are very happy with the win today,” said Premo. “Coming off two tough ties last weekend, we needed a big win and it feels great to beat Corban for the first time in my career. I am very proud of the team for being resilient and playing our game tonight.”
Another 20 minutes went by before the Beacons put up an insurance goal when Danny Rojas scored on a Penalty Kick for his seventh goal of the year.
For the Beacons, the win moves them into fifth-place in the CCC with four games remaining in the regular season. It was the first victory over Corban since October 16, 2010, a 2-1 win. It is just the fourth win over the Warriors in school history.
Head Coach Joao Ehlers said, “This was a very good performance today. We were able to control the tempo of the game and play on their half for most of the match. I am very pleased with the energy and effort the boys put forth.”
UP NEXT: Bushnell will be back in action on October 24, traveling to Klamath Falls to take on Oregon Tech (5-2-4, 3-2-1) at 2:30 pm.
