To students, alumni and staff at NCU, Tim Bergquist is known as the statistics professor, ACE Day Coordinator, and head of Quantitative Analysis. Yet there is a side to Dr. Bergquist that many do not know. In 1989 Dr. Bergquist’s sons gave him some Superman comics for Father’s day. This gift ignited a passion and he has been collecting Superman memorabilia ever since.
Dr. Bergquist has loaned a small portion of his extensive Superman and comic book memorabilia, as well as his extensive stamp collection to the Kellenberger Library, as the first faculty member to participate in “The Secret Life of ….” Display. This ongoing series will highlight the hobbies and talents of NCU’s faculty and staff. Dr. Bergquist’s collection contains over 40 short boxes of comics, around 4,500 total. The collection goes back to 1972 and features complete runs of all series collected since 1986. Included in the assortment is a reprint of the original 1938 Action Comic where Superman first made his appearance. On the more novelty side of the group is the ‘Quillow’, a quilt that folds into a pillow. The Superman Quillow was designed and created by Dr. Bergquist’s wife, Lesley, over 30 years ago from a Superman-themed sheet.
Dr. Bergquist is also an avid stamp collector, having begun his collection in 1978 and primarily focuses on stamps of the United Nations, U.S. history and culture, and geography. He has published two articles in the periodical The American Philatelist, a magazine dedicated to studying and collecting stamps. Both articles are featured in the display.
