NCU Hosts Model United Nations General Sessions

President Joe Womack speaks at the 2017 Model UNNorthwest Christian University President Joseph D. Womack, Ed.D. welcomed 1,100 students from 50 Oregon high schools during the Oregon Model United Nations’ opening general session held in the Morse Events Center on Thurs., April 13, 2017. The student delegates will also gather in the MEC for general sessions on Friday and Saturday.

Model United Nations – Oregon’s oldest youth organization – offers high school students an opportunity to participate in a simulation of the United Nations by exploring contemporary world issues related to security, economics, human rights, health and the environment.

The featured guest speaker for this year’s Oregon Model United Nations is Yashar Vasef, the current President of the United Nations Association of Portland and a member of the national United Nations Association of the USA board of directors. Previously, the State Director of the Iowa United Nations Association from 2010-2014, he was the recipient of the Iowa International Award in 2014. He has also held positions at United for Iran and The Stanley Foundation.

Since 1947, approximately 1,500 delegates arrive at the annual three-day conference in Eugene. Model UN fosters global citizenship by developing important skills including leadership, teamwork, public speaking and negotiation.
