NCU Professor Johnny Lake Featured MLK Speaker

Lake, Johnny2Northwest Christian University professor Johnny Lake will be the featured speaker Jan. 18

The Chehalem Cultural Center will host the fifth annual Chehalem Valley Community Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Jan. 18.

The program will feature performances from local school choirs, the First United Methodist Church Choir, George Fox University violinist Simeon Brown and more.

New this year is an hour-long social time at 5 p.m. in the lobby, including an art exhibit, live music and refreshments, with the approximately 90-minute main program beginning at 6 p.m. in the ballroom.

This year’s theme is “Creating a Beloved Community Through Unity and Diversity,” and Dr. Johnny Lake of Northwest Christian University will be the featured speaker.

Lake is a consultant, trainer and speaker, certified in programs respecting leadership, diversity, community building, cross-cultural communication and interactions skills, equity and ethics for youth and adults, according to a press release. He consults with government, professional and educational agencies and organizations. Lake teaches diversity courses for teacher and counselor preparation programs at Northwest Christian University, Pacific University and University of Oregon.

He is an administrator on special assignment with Eugene 4J School District, an advocate for needs of at-risk youth, and provides teacher training institutes and student learning and leadership opportunities. He is also recognized as a writer and storyteller. He is a former chairman of the Oregon Commission on Black Affairs and Education Chair for the NAACP.

The event is produced by an independent volunteer committee founded cooperatively by the Chehalem Park and Recreation District, Chehalem Cultural Center, Newberg School District, Newberg Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs and members of the community.
