Eleven students from the University of Macau’s Shiu Pong College will arrive on campus June 21, 2017, for the NCU American Culture and Language Program.
“This is the third year students from the University of Macau have come to NCU to study and experience American culture,” said Tim Veach, Ph.D., an associate professor of business and director of NCU’s American Culture & Language Program. “The visiting students will live in NCU dorms, dine in the cafeteria, take classes in English, tour the region and experience American culture with NCU students, faculty, staff, and their families.”
NCU students will serve as program assistants to help the visiting students navigate the campus and the community as well as to make friends.
“One highlight will be an overnight cabin stay in the mountains, where the students will participate in leadership workshops with NCU Business Professor Pete Diffenderfer, Ph.D. and myself,” Veach said. “Music Professor and Assistant Program Director Addison Wong will lead the group in song. In addition, a home stay experience is planned so the University of Macau students can spend a weekend with an NCU family.”
Veach notes the University of Macau Program is consistent with NCU’s objectives of world mission activity and global academic outreach.
The students will return to Macau on July 5. Macau is in Eastern Asia, bordering the South China Sea and China. It is a Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China.
The University of Macau (UM) was founded in 1981. Its predecessor was the private University of East Asia. Through 34 years of development, UM has become a leading university in Macau, with marked progress in teaching, research, and community service. The only public comprehensive university in Macao, UM has produced more than 26,000 outstanding graduates for society since it’s founding.
The UM community currently consists of more than 9,400 students. It offers more than 130 bachelor’s, master’s, PhD and other programs, through its Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology, Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences, and Honors College. English is the main medium of instruction, with some programs being taught in Chinese, Portuguese or Japanese.
