EUGENE, Ore. – In the world of education, there are those whose commitment to shaping young minds shines brightly. Susan Inman, Ed.D., a lifelong educator, is one such individual. Her remarkable journey and unwavering dedication to students showcase her passion for making the world a better place through education.
Inman’s path in education began as a junior high science teacher in Yuma, Arizona. This initial step into the classroom proved transformative, as she gained invaluable lessons in motivation and the critical art of ensuring student success. Determined to expand her horizons, Inman obtained a MA in Educational Administration from Northern Arizona University. This advanced degree added a crucial layer to her educational expertise and further ignited her passion for the field.
Upon returning to Oregon, Inman taught computer programming at North Medford High School and then assumed leadership positions within the school district. During her 14-year tenure as an elementary principal she honed her skills in supporting staff, ensuring student safety, fostering confidence, and creating the optimal learning environment. Inman skillfully balanced the demands of work and family while achieving a remarkable milestone: earning a Doctorate in Educational Leadership.
Inman’s journey in educational administration extended to the Oregon Department of Education, where she served as a director for Charter Schools, 21st Century Community Learning Center, English Language Learners (Title III), and Migrant Education. Currently she serves at the Harrisburg School District as the District Success Coordinator, a role that continues to improve the educational experience for local students.
With an unwavering passion for teaching and learning, Inman embarked on a new phase in her career by moving into higher education. Beginning in 2002, she took on various adjunct and temporary faculty positions at prestigious institutions such as Willamette University, Concordia University, Southern Oregon University, and, most recently, Bushnell University.
As an adjunct professor for Bushnell University’s School of Education, Inman brings a wealth of experience to the classroom. Her diverse background, including roles as a teacher, administrator, curriculum director, and special education director, ensures that she can offer students a holistic perspective on education. She has taught and supervised early reading programs, embraced technology extensively, and gained insight from every position she has held. Inman finds excitement in sharing these rich experiences with aspiring educators.
In her courses, Inman fosters collaboration among students, encouraging them to create projects that provide additional learning opportunities for their peers. One notable project involved working with 16 students to explore the intricate U.S. special education system. Students chose their topics, conducted research, and presented their findings creatively, resulting in a more meaningful learning experience and better preparation for their future roles.
Alongside fostering collaboration, Inman prioritizes staying current with best practices and trends. Her active involvement in boards, professional organizations, and seminars ensures that her teaching aligns with the ever-evolving education landscape. For example, she recently attended a Bushnell-provided training on the latest methods for promoting equity among students, colleagues, and communities.
Inman’s dedication to growing as an educator and person is part of her calling to serve others. She continues to find meaning in supporting students because, as she puts it, “Students are exciting and unpredictable. I always learn something new from my students, whether they are in K-12 public schools or at the university level. Most importantly, my calling to serve in education supports my spiritual belief in making the world a better place for us all.”
